Luncheon with Jeannie Cho Lee

To highlight the compatibility of German wine and Asian food, Wines of Germany recently hosted a "Perfect Pairings" luncheon in Vancouver with award-winning author Jeannie Cho Lee, Master of Wine. The luncheon celebrated Jeannie’s new 52-page booklet on pairing German wines with eight different Asian cuisines.

German Riesling prevails in Singapore

For the first time, the German Wine Institute participates at the Food & Hotel Asia in Singapore from april 17th - 20th 2012. A German wine was awarded "Best of all wines" at his year's "Wine & Spirit Asia Wine Challenge": A 2009 Riesling Kabinett Zeltinger Sonnenuhr of Markus Molitor wine estate from the Mosel. It beat hundreds of wines from all over the world.

Dry wines remain a growing trend

Germans increasingly prefer dry wines. Since the year 2000, the proportion of dry Qualitätswein (quality wine) and Prädikatswein (quality wine with special attributes) has risen from 34 to 41 percent. Semi-dry wines have increased slightly from 21 to 23 percent during the same period.

Improved revenues for German wine exporters

German wine exporters increased their sales revenue in nearly all the important foreign markets during the past year. As the German Wine Institute (DWI) announed at the international wine fair, ProWein, the average price of the exported wines from German growing regions increased overall typically by 11.8 percent to 2.27 €/l in 2011 compared with the previous year.

Wine experiences growing apprecation in this country as the almost constantly increasing expenditure on wine in Germany shows. According to information from the German Wine Institute (DWI), consumers again spent about two percent more on wine than in the previous year.
 

Wine exports in 2011 decreased as expected after small harvest

In the past year, the export of domestic wines was very strongly influenced by the below average harvest yield of the 2010 wine vintage which, at about 7.1 million hectolitres, was down by 25 percent in comparison to the long term average. Therefore, not all export markets could be supplied to the full extent with wines from the German growing regions, the German Wine Institute (DWI) announced prior to the international wine fair, ProWein.

Icewine at last: list-update

As winter-high "Cooper" visits Germany coming down from Siberia and brings us the first real winter period, the Icewine-harvest becomes possible in more areas. This morning word came from Germany's Saale-Unstrut region, stating that last night temperatures around -12°C (~10°F) there were some deeply frozen grapes for Icewine harvested. Sugar contents of up to sensational 221° Oechsle were measured.

German Wine Institute presents regional wines at ProWein 2012

This year the German Wine Institute (DWI) will attend ProWein, the international trade fair for wines and spirits, using the slogan "Discover the Taste of our Regions". The regional focus was chosen due to the emphasis the German Tourism Board DZT) wants to place on "Wine Culture and Nature" in order to advertise Germany’s wine regions as key tourist destinations in 2012.

Vintners donate for Wine Saves Life

Monika Reule, Managing Director of the German Wine Institute assigned Joachim Binz from "Wine Saves Life" a 2.191 euro check on behalf of German vintners on december 15th 2011. The sum had been generated by selling counter-bottles of some 200 vintners that took part at a blind pinot noir tasting.This wine sampling had been organised in preparation of an international event in London.

Top positions for German Pinot Noir amoung the world's leading wines

German Pinot Noir came up trumps at a recent International Pinot Noir tasting, with seven of the judges’ top 10 wines coming from Germany. The blind tasting, which was judged by a world-class panel of wine experts including Jancis Robinson MW, Xavier Rousset MS and Peter McCombie MW, was organised by the German Wine Institute and chaired by Tim Atkin MW.

German Pinot Noir reveals itself

Germany has long kept secret its world class Pinot Noirs, or Spätburgunder, though over the past few years has been slowly letting in the rest of the world on these wonderful wines. Indeed, they hit the headlines in the UK recently, when German versions of this grape variety hauled seven out of the top ten spots in an international blind tasting, tasted almost solely by UK trade folk.
 

More headlines in London

November 16th 2011, the two German wineries "Burgerspital" and "Horst Sauer" were awarded IWSC-Trophies at the International Wine & Spirit Competition's annual banquet. After the recent overwhelming results for German wines at a blind tasting in the metropolitan city, this was the second time within one month that "Wine of Germany" made headlines in Britain.

Last weekend 63rd German Wine Queen Annika Strebel was being celebrated in her hometown "Wintersheim", located in the wine growing region of Rheinhessen. Only two weeks after her election numerous friends and fans took the chance to have a chat with her. She will travel the world in 201/2012, taking on over 200 appointments in order to represent all 13 wine growing regions of Germany.

Wine lovers can expect great 2011 vintage

German wine producers are looking forward to a very good 2011 vintage which will be available in sufficient quantity in nearly all of the growing regions. The German Wine Institute (DWI) announced that the total amount harvested, according to the latest estimates, is expected to be about nine million hectolitres.

Annika Strebel is the 63rd German Wine Queen

The new Wine Queen was simply overwhelmed. "I just can't believe it", said Annika Strebel. The 23-year-old student of viticulture from the village of Wintersheim in Rheinhessen is the 63rd German Wine Queen. She is the first German Wine Queen to hail from the largest German wine growing region since 1999.  
 

Magnificent results at Autumn auction

In the afternoon of 25 September 2011, the gavel went down for the last time this year at the Nahe and concluded the successful auction weekend of the VDP regions Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Rheingau and Nahe. 11,500 bottles of wine came under the hammer which generated a turnover of more than 1.2 million Euro.

Thieves swipe award-winning German Pinot Noir harvest

First-class German winegrowers Joachim Jaillet and Stephan Attmann from the winery "Von Winning" have suffered the devastating loss of their grapes right before harvest time. But the culprit was neither frost nor hungry birds. Thieves armed with harvest machines managed to go unnoticed as they plucked several tons of grapes from the vines overnight.
 

Sweden: Generation Riesling in Stockholm

The first Generation Riesling event in Sweden at the Audi Forum was a great success. On september 8th 2011, a group of 11 winemakers from the Generation Riesling fraternity presented a selection of fine German wines in Stockholm.

The new research for the Wine and Spririts Trade Association (WSTA) Market Report suggests that a switch by wine drinkers to lower alcohol wines compared to standard wines is ongoing. Advantage for cool climate wine growing zones of Germany, since grapes have a long time to ripen and develop their internationally reknowned full bodied aromas in lower alcohol wines.
 

"Pope drinks Riesling"

Habemus Riesling-Papam! According to the Oberkircher Winzer eG (Oberkirch winegrowers’ cooperative) from the Baden region the Freiburg seminary has ordered dry Riesling Kabinett. The wine will be included in three dinner party menus during the Pope’s visit in Freiburg on 24 and 25 September 2011.  
 

Light and shade in German wine export

In the first half of 2011 German wine exporters have largely retained the level of turnover in comparison to the same period of the previous year. According to the German Wine Institute (DWI) export sales decreased slightly by two percent to a total of 174 million Euro in the first six months of this year. The export volume fell by 15 percent to 766,000 hectolitres.
