Riesling in the Rockies

The European Union and "Wines of Germany" presented top European Rieslings at the "Destination Riesling" booths at the 28th annual Food & WineClassic in Aspen, Colorado from June 18-20. The event catered to a targeted group of 5,000 wine enthusiasts and VIP members of the trade and media industry as well as reknowned chefs.

Mario Batali, Tom Colicchio, David Chang, Masaharu Morimoto, Michael Symon and Jacques Pépin. The list of participating chefs read like the who is who of fine dining.

High-Profile Audience
This was an excellent opportunity to reach a high-profile audience that is passionate about food and wine. Timed to occur after the Riesling & Co. tastings in New York and San Francisco, the event helped reinforce the belief that Riesling is the perfect summer varietal.

At the Classic’s Grand Tasting, the European Union and Wines of Germany showcased wines from over 19 top Riesling producers from Germany, Alsace and Austria at the two “Destination Riesling” tables.

Expertises at “Destination Riesling” tables
Aldo Sohm, wine director of renowned New York restaurant, Le Bernardin, and named the
“Best Sommelier in the World 2008” by the World Sommelier Association, along with Paul Grieco, partner, general manager and wine director of renowned New York restaurant Hearth and Terroir wine bars, poured at the “Destination Riesling” tables and provided their expertise on the varietal to attendees.

On Friday, June 18 from 1:30 – 4:00 pm, the team hosted a BBQ at the Blue Victorian for Classic event guests. Eight European Riesling Spätlese wines and German BBQ foods were served to 30 restaurant and beverage trade guests. The meal highlighted how Riesling is such a food-friendly varietal.

Paul Grieco hosted two “Riesling: A World Tour” seminars during the weekend which included:
2007 Von Kesselstatt Riesling Trocken, Josephshofer, Mosel, Germany
2008 Johannes Hirsch Zobinger Heiligenstein Riesling, Kamptal, Austria
2005 Josmeyer Les Pierrets Riesling, Alsace, France

Riesling’s unique ability to pair with food
The presentation was well-received by over 60 attendees and drove traffic to the Destination Riesling tables at the Grand Tasting. On the evening of June19, the team, joined by Aldo Sohm and Paul Grieco, hosted a private reception at the Blue Victorian house to highlight Riesling’s unique ability to pair with food. This was the third year in a row we hosted this reception.

Over 16 wines were served, complemented by Asian food selections.
