Trend towards white and dry wines in Germany
The market share of white wines rose by one percentage point in 2016, at the expense of red wine consumption, and by six per cent compared with 2008. In 2016, red wines maintained a 47 per cent share in wine sales, rosé wine sales have remained unchanged at ten percent for seven years.
In terms of taste, most German consumers still prefer dry and off-dry wines. In 2016, as in the previous year, marketers finished 46 per cent of their domestic quality wines in a dry style, while 21 per cent of the quality approved wines were produced as off-dry, in line with demand. The volume of sweet wines on offer rose by two percentage points last year, meaning that precisely a third of all German quality wines were bottled with this flavour in 2016.
