Asia – an important growth market for German wine exporters

From November 3rd to 5th 2011, the German wine-making industry will present itself at this year’s Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair with a wide range of high quality wines. According to the German Wine Institute (DWI), Asia has developed into an important sales market for German wine exporters in recent years.

"In 2010, exports to our Asian markets - with 8.5 million litres of wine to the value of 33 million Euro - have increased by about a third compared with the previous year. They have thereby reached a share of nine percent of the total German wine export turnover", says Monika Reule, the DWI's managing director.

"China, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Hongkong and Taiwan are amongst our most important export destinations. Currently, the Chinese market is developing particularly dynamically, with an increase in turnover of 87 percent in the first half of 2011", Reule continues to explain.

White and red quality and predicate wines from the medium and top price segment are at the centre of the German presentation in Hongkong this year.

The German Wine Institute will also host special tastings of the worldwide trend varieties Riesling and Pinot Noir in order to attract the attention of the trade visitors to the range that the German wine producers offer.

Germany is the largest producer of Riesling and the third largest producer of Pinot Noir worldwide and is excellently positioned in the international comparison of these grape varieties.

Moreover, fresh and fruity Riesling wines from the German growing regions harmonise just as well with Asian cuisine as the velvety Pinor Noir wines which are characterised by a comparatively low tannin content.

Trade fair visitors can convince themselves of the special suitability of German wines for Asian cuisine in the newly published English book „Perfect Pairings - German Wines & Asian Flavours”, written by the renowned author Jeannie Cho Lee.

The joint German stand in hall 3G-E18 consists of eleven businesses from the wine industry; it is organised and financed by the Bundesministerium für Ernährung, Landwirtschaft und Verbraucherschutz (BMELV), the German Federal Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection.
