German Wine Institute puts focus on German Sekt 2019

02/04/2019

This coming year the German Wine Institute (DWI) will focus increasingly on German sparkling wines, called “Sekt”. This will become especially apparent at ProWein 2019, where “Germany ´s Sparkling Wines” will be the central theme of the DWI Pavilion.

Eleven renowned sparkling wine experts from ten different countries were invited by the DWI to shortlist a collection of 20 wines for the open tasting at their trade fair stand. Among the participants were Guenael Revel (Canada), Gido van Imschoot (Belgium) and Essi Avellan (Finland), who regularly publish comprehensive guides to the international sparkling wine world. Following the DWI competition announcement, approx. 200 wines were submitted for the tasting. The top three will receive an award at ProWein as “Germany´s Best Sparkling Wines”. As part of two-day information trip, the panel of experts went on to visit large and smaller Sekt producers in different wine regions.

To increase public awareness of the Sekt topic, a 22-page brochure on the country´s sparkling wines is now available in German and English at the DWI shop. It explains what is so special about German Sekt, including a short review of the history, gives helpful tips on serving the wines and holds recipes in store for sophisticated Sekt cocktails created by TV celebrity barkeeper Nic Shanker. For the illustrations in the brochure, numerous new photographs were produced last year around the theme of Sekt, which are also available in the online photo gallery.

Furthermore, the DWI has produced a video which aims to whet one´s appetite for Sekt and will be used in advertising the topic through online media as well as on the social networks.
