DWI Showcasing "Cool Wines" at ProWein

03/07/2018

Generation Riesling ready to break bread and chill out / The German Wine Institute will be presenting "Germany's Coolest Wines" campaign at ProWein 2018, with 20 wines selected for their notably distinct looks or concepts. The finalists were selected from 385 initial submissions, followed by a blind tasting and expert evaluation by an industry jury. ProWein attendees are invited to come taste them at the DWI tasting booth in Hall 13 (13A80).

"Our presentation at ProWein this year will showcase the tremendous creativity by German winegrowers in marketing their products. After all, innovative wine concepts are more important than ever for producers to stand out against the global wine competition. Foreign markets in particular are largely unfamiliar with the new, cool generation of wines from Germany," explains DWI Managing Director Monika Reule.

The DWI conducted a three-week open vote on its website. Thousands of visitors took advantage of the chance to cast a ballot for their favorites. The top three finishers will be announced and awarded on Sunday, 18 March 2018 at 11:00 am during a ceremony at the DWI stand.

The fair's Monday session will feature another DWI event: the prize ceremony for the "Excellent Wine Gastronomy" competition, co-organized by the DWI and Original SELTERS.

"Pearls in the Glass – German Sparkling Discoveries" will welcome industry visitors on Sunday and Monday at noon in the ProWein Forum in Hall 13. This English-language tasting will be led by Master of Wine Anne Krebiehl.

The culinary curation will continue courtesy of the DWI and the German Bread Institute: bread sommelier Jan-Christian von der Heide and one of the German wine princesses will host an event on pairing various bread creations with German wines. The sessions will be held on Sunday and Monday at 12:30 pm.

As in past years, the DWI will also continue its outreach to the many international buyers, sellers and sommeliers attending the fair, offering the latest news and trends from Germany's 13 winegrowing regions. There'll be another round of our special treat for Dutch visitors: an informational session on Sunday dubbed the "Orange Hour" and tailored to that nation's specific interests.

Over the course of ProWein, the DWI booth will be ground zero for a range of events from other organizations in the German wine industry. The Silvaner Forum, Ecovin and PIWI International have all reserved time, as have the winegrowing regions of Sachsen, Baden and Württemberg.

5th Annual Generation Riesling Event

Ten members of Generation Riesling from four different winegrowing regions will be presenting their wines and themselves at Hall 13/Stand D100. This includes daily tastings at 11:00 am and 3:30 pm on topics like "The Pinot Miracle" and "Riesling Only!", including sessions moderated by the German Wine Queen and the German Wine Princesses.

The young winemakers will also be inviting visitors to join them at 5:00 pm on Monday for informal refreshments and relaxed conversation.

The German Wine Institute will be presenting "Germany's Coolest Wines" campaign at ProWein 2018, with 20 wines selected for their notably distinct looks or concepts. The finalists were selected from 385 initial submissions, followed by a blind tasting and expert evaluation by an industry jury. ProWein attendees are invited to come taste them at the DWI tasting booth in Hall 13 (13A80).

20 Finalists: 385 wines from all 13 of Germany's winegrowing regions were submitted. The top 50 wines from a quality standpoint were selected in a blind tasting – after all, however "cool" the concept, the wine has to be top notch too. After an intense round of discussions, the seven-person jury of experts ultimately selected 20 wines for the final vote.
