Final figures: 10.4 million hectoliters of wine must 2018

04/02/2019

The national wine production of the vintage 2018 amounts to 10.4 million hectoliters (hl) in Germany. These figures range slightly below the 10.67 hl estimate that had been published in October 2018. The up to date figures have been circulated by the German Wine Institute (DWI) on the basis of the final harvest results of the Federal Statistical Office.

The year 2018 is the second largest vintage of the century after 2007. The reason for the differences between forecasts and results may be that many winemakers have decided to distil wine above the quality wine quotas.

The largest regional harvest with 2.91 million hl was brought in in Rheinhessen, the Palatinate follows with 2.5 million hl. Even the regions of Baden and Württemberg cracked with 1.5 and 1.15 million hl the million mark. 918,000 hl were harvested in the Mosel region, 524,940 in Franconia, 392,853 in the Nahe region and 279,108 in the Rheingau. The amount of land- and raw wine is 454,000 hl.
