German Wine-growers Harvest Nine Percent More
German wine-growers are altogether satisfied with the qualities and and quantities of grapes harvested in 2014. Based on the final statistics just released by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the German Wine Institute/Mainz reports that the 9.2 million hectoliters harvested is about nine percent more than the year before and in line with the ten-year average. After the relatively small volume of 2013, the new vintage helped replenish low cellar stocks.
Wine must yields in the Mosel, Hessische Bergstrasse, and Sachsen regions were up more than 30 percent compared with 2013, and more than 20 percent in Baden, the Rheingau, and the Ahr. Although Rheinhessen and the Pfalz posted increases of only one to two percent, Germany’s two largest regions accounted for over half of the entire crop in 2014. White wine grapes made up the lion’s share of the harvest, or 63 percent and red wine grapes, some 37 percent – equivalent to 5.8 million hl and 3.4 million hl, respectively.
In terms of volume and value, vintage 2014 is in tune with market conditions. Due to the mild winter of 2013/2014, Eiswein is an absolute rarity.
