Germany's Best Sekt Wines Selected

03/17/2019

To mark the start of the international ProWein wine trade fair, the German Wine Institute (DWI) on March 17 announced the winners of its competition to find the best German sekt. The three victors were culled from 200 submitted samples from all 13 German winegrowing regions.

First place in the eyes of the international panel of sekt specialists was claimed by X. Triumvirat Grande Cuvée brut, 2010 vintage from Sekthaus Raumland, renowned and prizewinning sekt maker from Rheinhessen.

Silver went to the Grande Cuvée dosage zero, 2014 vintage, from Griesel & Compagnie Sekthaus Streit of Bensheim on the Hessische Bergstraße, which has enjoyed a meteoric rise in the German sekt scene.

Third place fell to the 2015 Blanc de Blancs Chardonnay brut nature from Weingut Braunewell, which for many years has been producing high-quality sekt in the Rheinhessen town of Essenheim.

The eleven jurors from ten different countries praised the energy and innovation that they tasted from these representatives of the German sekt scene. In their view, the 20 finalists all epitomize sparkling wine of the finest caliber and are each absolutely capable of competing on the international stage. "What separated our winner from the others was ultimately the fine details," the jury concluded.

The winners were presented with an engraved saber at ProWein by DWI Managing Director Monika Reule, perfect for "sabering" off the neck of a sealed bottle of sparkling wine. Among those on hand to congratulate the winners were German Wine Queen Carolin Klöckner and barkeeper and TV personality Nic Shanker.
