"Intangible cultural heritage is always about people and their skills"

Prof. Dr. Christoph Wulf, Chairman of the Expert Committee on Intangible Cultural Heritage and Vice President of the German UESCO Commission, emphasized the importance of the intangible cultural heritage in his laudation. While the world heritage sites are concrete, material, cultural-historical landscapes, documents or monuments, such as the Cologne Cathedral or the Acropolis, the intangible cultural heritage is always about people and their skills:

"Knowing how something works is not enough if there are not people who put their knowledge into practice, develop their skills and, above all, pass them on to the next generation," says Wulf. The managing director of the German Wine Academy, Monika Reule, thanked Dr. Hildegard Kaluza, on behalf of all the bearers of wine culture in Germany. "Germany looks back on over 2000 years of wine culture, which is actively shaped and cultivated by many, many people. This begins with the preservation of the cultural landscapes themselves and continues through many customs and traditions that are lived. With the inclusion of wine culture in the nationwide Directory of the intangible cultural heritage, these achievements are recognized, for which all bearers of the wine culture are very grateful and proud, "said Reule.
