Harmony between German Wines and Asian Cuisines

01/11/2021

German wines have a natural advantage when it comes to harmony with selected Asian dishes. Their lighter alcohol content, freshness and elegance make them the perfect accompaniment.

With a lighter alcohol content, sometimes crisp acidity, moderate residual sweetness or soft tannins for red grape varieties, they go perfectly with a variety of styles of Asian cuisine. Dry white wines are also valued, as they are ideal accompaniments to meals thanks to their elegance and freshness.

The popularity of Japanese cuisine, which was declared an intangible world cultural heritage by UNESCO in December 2013, is just as limitless as the many Chinese recipes that delight gourmets around the world.

The German Wine Institute (DWI) and its agencies in China und Japan have put together a selection of 25 homemade dishes and published them in English, Japanese and Chinese with corresponding wine recommendations. The brochure "Harmony between German Wines and Asian Cuisine" in English, Japanese and Chinese languages is also available online and is limited to a total of sixteen dishes.

Different countries, different table manners

Of course, the traditional table manners in Japan and China differ significantly from those in Western countries. For example, many dishes from vegetables to fish, poultry and pork are served at the same time and shared in between lively conversation. Finding a suitable wine that does justice to the variety of taste sensations is not easy. The culture of enjoying wine with food is still relatively new in Asia and the selected recipes should serve as inspiration.

The communication strategy of the Wines of Germany office in Tokyo foresees a strong focus on German wines in connection with local cuisine in the coming years. In China, due to the Riesling Weeks, the topic has been an accepted part of the catering industry for a long time.
