Jancis Robinson sees Germany's 2019 vintage as a breakthrough

For a number of years, Germany's vintners have eagerly worked their way up to a top position in the global wine business.


In her latest Financial Times article, renowned wine journalist Jancis Robinson suggests that Germany's 2019 vintage is a breakthrough in the public's perception. If ever there was a time to shake off any prejudices one may have towards Riesling, ‘the greatest white-wine grape in the world’, then Jancis suggests it is now.

She argues that especially the Mosel and Nahe region have profited from the Mediterranean summer and unique soils. In contrast to the preceding year, 2019 wasn’t as scorchingly hot, therefore the wines are ‘lighter and classier’, as Maximin von Schubert from the Mosel explains. Rain and cool nights throughout September helped the grapes retain acidity and freshness, despite the warm summer. All in all, it is a vintage that many German producers from all 13 regions are celebrating.

Other highly regarded wine critics are also hailing 2019 as a vintage to be remembered. Stuart Pigott, writing for JamesSuckling.com, enthuses, ‘The 2019 vintage is the best vintage I have ever tasted for German riesling in my four-decade career…. It is one of the greatest vintages of modern times and will be remembered for decades, possibly generations.’

So, try a glass of German 2019 Riesling and decide for yourself and if possible, lay some bottles down for years to come. That's one of Riesling's magnificent qualities, its ability to age so beautifully.
