Largest Wine Festival in the World – Dürkheim Wurstmarkt

09/07/2018

Dürkheim’s Wurstmarkt is not only the largest winefestival in the world; it’s also one of the most traditional and entertaining festivals in Germany, annually held in the Pfalz region during second and third week of september.

Around 300 award-winning wines and sparkling wines form the core of the festival (video).

The Wurstmarkt translates as 'sausage market' and takes place one hour southwest of Frankfurt: It was originally established as a market for farmers and winegrowers in the 15th century. Since then, it has grown from a local wine festival in the Palatinate into a vast public fair and is one of the highlights of the 85km German Wine Route.

Nine days and nine nights

It goes from small traditional wine stands to large wine halls, basing on what seems more inviting and intriguing. Nine days and nine nights of fairground rides, performances and catering outlets create a unique experience to be enjoyed by all the family. The large number of bands, playing music from a variety of genres, are sure to put visitors in a good mood!

At the heart of the Dürkheim Wurstmarkt are the wine stalls, known as wheelbarrow stands, which are built each year in the traditional style. They are the perfect setting to meet with friends and enjoy the award-winning wine, which is served in large tumblers known as "dubbegläser" or "schoppengläser".

Spectacular Fireworks

The event culminates in a spectacular fireworks display over Michelsberg hill. For people who are into an intimate atmosphere, there’s the Weindorf – or the wine village, with some of the best wine products in Germany and Europe. The festival really focuses on wines, but it’s not all that Wurstmarkt is offering.

Fun for the whole family

You’ll find a combination of wine, literature and lots of more interesting things. While you’re there, definitely go visit the Michaelskapelle (the chapel), right above the market.

The Wurstmarkt, which curiously translates as 'sausage market', is in fact the world's largest wine festival.
