Riesling remains King: Dutch and Belgians celebrate

04/22/2020

After all public festivals and outdoor markets honoring the King's 53rd birthday on April 27, 2020 were cancelled because of the corona pandemic, the "Koningsdag" turns into a "Woningsdag". It will be celebrated at home - with a national toast and serenade for King Willem-Alexander from all living rooms. And this time with German wines:

100 different German wine packages to choose from

Riesling remains king! So that the Dutch and Belgians don't have to forgo wines from the German wine-growing regions during these difficult times, the Wines of Germany information bureau of the Netherlands and Belgium has created an initiative for specialist retail in both countries. 52 Dutch and 28 Belgian retailers are offering their customers a total of over 100 different German wine packages at special prices with free shipping. Buzzword: Quarantine Packages.

This campaign is mainly advertised on social media. Usually there is an extra buzz around German wines this time each year with the annual "Riesling is King" boat trip through the canals of Amsterdam (archive/video). This year however, "Riesling is King" means that Riesling as well as many other themed wine packages will be delivered to people's homes. Themes include Wines for Barbecues, Exclusively Rosé, Spring Wines, and much more.

The DWI is also strengthening its online marketing in Germany. Wine producers are using digital channels and offering virtual wine tastings and events. These offers can be found in the winemaker search and in the events calendar.
