First China's sommelier competition in Shanghai
The three winners convinced in the final with outstanding performances.
Champion: Yaoheng Henry Wu of Guangzhou Morton’s Grill
Runner-up: Zhiheng Sol Yang of Wine Universe by Little Somms
Third-place: Feifei Liu of Middle House Shanghai
The wine knowledge of the participants was evaluated by the three experts and jurors Lu Yang and Frank Kämmer, both Master Sommeliers as well as Manuel Bretschi, head of the training department at the German Wine Institute. The Chinese sommeliers were tested in the categories wine knowledge, service, food and wine pairing as well as blind tasting.
Tan Mateus Wu, Head of DWI's China Office, explains the aim of the competition as follows: "The sommeliers are the first choice wine ambassadors when it comes to providing customers with optimum advice on wine selection. With this competition we would like to create an incentive for Chinese sommeliers to further expand and strengthen their knowledge of German wines, their diversity and potential.
The winners of the competition will take part in the Sommelier Summer Class in Germany. Here they will have the opportunity to visit German growing regions, refine their expertise and exchange ideas with sommeliers from all over the world.
