German wines gain market share in Finland again

01/19/2021

The Finnish alcohol monopoly ALKO has now released its sales figures for 2020: German wine has gained market share again. Last year, 20.2 % of all white wines sold in Finland came from Germany! Since 2013, the market share has grown year after year from 11.2 % onwards.

When it comes to the total wine market including red and sparkling wines, Germany is now number four in Finland, behind Chile, Italy and Spain. In 2018, we were still on number seven, but in just two years we left behind South Africa, Italy and France.

Devils Rock, Tausendhügel and Black Rock

Bestsellers from Germany are Devils Rock with more than 600 000 litres sold (up 41 % from 2019), Tausendhügel Dry Riesling with almost 360 000 litres (up 66 %) and Black Tower Rivaner with almost 330 000 litres (up 25 %).

Modern food trends made the success possible

Monika Halén, who has been running the Wines of Germany office in Finland for many years, told us that modern food trends in Finland ("Nordic Cuisine") have helped enormously and that Riesling has almost become a synonym for white wine. People are looking for lighter, more elegant styles of wines, even when it comes to red wine. That's why ALKO now also offers more than 40 German Spätburgunder wines, and Monika is sure that we will see even more German reds in the future.
