Japan: Wines of Germany outperforms competitors

01/06/2020

According to latest figures of Japanese customs, Wines of Germany is the best European performer for still wine imports.

Germany may represent only a 2 percent market share of all wines imported into Japan, but in 2019 the „Riesling Nation“ has seen a huge increase of sales of Riesling, Spätburgunder & Co. This results in an increase of almost 50 percent regarding the year-on-year rate and gives an impulse to the Japanese trade as well.

Sales increase correlates with more media coverage

„All European wines were winners last year because Japan scrapped import duties on EU-wines (from 15 percent to zero percent), but no other country came even close to the performance of ‚Wines of  Germany‘, says Director of Marketing Steffen Schindler.

The figures correlate with more media coverage in favor of Wines of Germany in Japan. Amoung other portals Yahoo.jp published two articles thru their lifestyle topical page at the end of the year 2019:

The articles were originally published by the Japanese web magazines "Leon" and "Salai".

Also, the ‚Wines of Germany‘-Japan office reached a new milestone via their facebook account. Some 20,000 Japanese winelovers and multipliers teamed up with this effective channel by the end of 2019.
