Positive development of the wine market continues


Wines of German origin, in particular, continued to be increasingly purchased by consumers in the third quarter of this year.

According to the German Wine Institute (DWI), both the volume and the value of sales of domestic wines increased by around eight percent compared to the same quarter of the previous year, while foreign wine sales only grew by two percent in volume and five percent in value. This emerges from the market analysis of the Nielsen Homescan Panel, which analyzes the wine purchases of private households on behalf of the DWI. It was also noteworthy that more people turned to local wines than in the third quarter of 2019.

Entire German wine market grew in the third quarter

The growth in domestic wines is primarily due to very strong demand in July, while wine purchases were significantly lower in August and September. “This is probably due to the fact that the households had on the one hand stocked up on a certain amount of wine and on the other hand, the situation in the gastronomy and catering sector relaxed somewhat from August onwards, so that wine consumption has shifted back there,” explained  Monika Reule, managing director of the DWI.

The entire German wine market, including wines from all origins, grew by five percent in volume and seven percent in value in the third quarter.
