ProWein summary: German wines meet modern tastes
The German Wine Institute (DWI) created a particularly great deal of interest by its promotion "Germany’s Coolest Wines". On the Friday preceding the trade fair, the news agency dpa had already reported about the nation-wide online voting in Germany. After the well-attended award ceremony on Sunday, Germany’s TV-broadcaster ZDF presented the promotion’s three award-winning wines in the course of its program "Volle Kanne" (Video in German) on the fair’s Monday. DWI’s stand was visited by representatives from regional broadcasting stations SWR, WDR and MDR, local daily newspapers Tagesspiegel, Rheinische Post and Freie Presse Chemnitz as well as nation-wide publications such as Welt am Sonntag, Handelsblatt’s young edition “Orange” and staff from dpa’s editorial units News as well as Services.
In addition, DWI hosted many foreign guests and international journalists during the fair. In the course of the traditional "Orange Hour", more than 100 visitors from the Netherlands celebrated the German wines and painted DWI’s stand a bright orange. In the run-up to and the aftermath of the ProWein, DWI staff organized and accompanied journeys to Germany’s wine-growing regions by more than 60 journalists and professionals from all over the world. Among them were Russian buyers travelling to the Moselle, Taiwanese importers and journalists as well as Canadian representatives of the import monopoly agency Liquor Control Board Ontario, both visiting the Rheinhessen, Nahe, Rheingau, Palatinate and Moselle regions, and Chinese buyers, traders and journalists, who ventured into Baden (impressions on Facebook).
DWI’s tasting counter was well attended throughout the fair. About 250 bottles of the 20 coolest wines were poured. DWI’s sparkling wine-themed events at the Forum were completely booked out with 50 participants per session. On Monday, the fair’s professional visitors also showed a keen interest in the award ceremony "Ausgezeichnete Weingastronomie" (excellent wine-gastronomy).
The winemakers at the Generation Riesling stand were also highly pleased by visitor attendance figures. During all three business days of the fair, their moderated wine tastings and the new Abendbrot (supper) format created a lot of interest.
