Recommended: Light wines for the summer
Such wines can be found in the German wine-growing regions rather frequently, reason being that here the grapes have a lot of time to ripen and create aroma components due to the relatively cool climate. This way, ultimately the wines offer great taste at a low alcohol level and a wonderful interplay of fresh-fruity aciditiy and aromas and flavours typical of the variety.
Naturally, in warm and sunny weather one likes to enjoy wine alfresco. Then it is advantageous if the wine is really fruity, as delicately fragrant ones can often not be perceived nasally well enough in the open air. Therefore, aromatic varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc or Scheurebe are a good choice for such occasions, but also light Kabinett wines. In general, white or rosé wines are preferred in summer, and semi-sparkling (secco) or sparkling wines can be refreshing with their tingly carbon-dioxide.
If you like something stronger, why not try a rosé or even a red wine – many light red wines are excellent when chilled. Trollinger from Baden-Württemberg or Portugieser from the Pfalz or Rheinhessen offer great pleasure even in summer.
No matter what you choose in the end, chilling the wine to the right temperature is vital in warm weather (coolers – also for travelling – are available at the DWI Online Shop). As soon as poured, the wine warms up quickly by 2 to 3 degrees, therefore you can chill it more than usual beforehand. Sparkling wines should be served at about 6 degrees, semi-sparkling and white wines at about 8. Rosé should be chilled to 10 degrees, red wine to 12.
Summer wines are a great match for light cuisine: Salads, fish, vegetables or goat’s cheese are a perfect choice. To accompany barbecued meat we recommend a somewhat stronger red wine or alternatively a white wine with a little bit of residual sugar, which will go wonderfully with the roast aromas of the meat.
