Roadshow boosts German wine business in China
Wines from Germany, especially Riesling, have become a hit on e-commerce and social media platforms in China. After the industry slump caused by the pandemic, German wine is recovering. This is also visible by watching the export figures: the value of German wine exports rose by 19 million euro in 2021, an increase of 20% compared to the previous year. From January to May 2022, the import volume and value of German wines in China increased even more. German wines now ranks in 6th place, right after France, Chile, Spain, Italy and the United States.
The 2022 “Riesling & Co. China Roadshow” hosted grand tastings and masterclasses. 32 importers and wineries presented their wines to more than 1300 professional trade visitors. The certified German wine professionals Yang Lu MS and Wei Xing presented a selection of various German wine styles of high quality level to around 120 trade visitors in the cities Guangzhou, Changsha and Shanghai.
The “Interwine Grand Challenge” and “TOP50 German Wine” 2022 award ceremony took place in the evening of the roadshow in Guangzhou. Cassidy Dart (Master of Wine), chairman of the jury, presented the award to the winning wines of the "TOP 50 German Wines".
Wines of Germany will continue to lead the growth of German wines in the Chinese market by consistently organizing promotional activities and by working closely with German wine importers and wineries. The next Riesling & Co. China Roadshow in 2023 is already being planned.
