Wine Institute honours best aromatic wines


To mark the 100th anniversary of the Scheurebe grape, the German Wine Institute (DWI) has created a special award this year for the best aromatic wines of 2016. An expert jury voted for the best wine from each of the categories Scheurebe, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewuerztraminer and Muskateller that had previously scored highly in the DLG´s national German Wine Awards 2016.

In the Scheurebe category, the Rheinhessen estate Fleischmann from Gau-Algesheim took first prize with their 2015 Scheurebe Spaetlese from the Gau-Algesheimer Goldberg vineyard. Organic producer Gaenz from Hackenheim in Rheinhessen entered the best wine from the fashionable Sauvignon Blanc grape with their 2015 Sauvignon Blanc Qualitaetswein trocken (dry quality wine). The award for the best Gewuerztraminer of the competition went to the Winzergenossenschaft Achkarren in the Kaiserstuhl. The Baden co-operative convinced the jury with their single-vineyard 2015 Gewuerztraminer Spaetlese from the Achkarrer Schlossberg. The 2015 Goldmuskateller Gau-Bischofsheimer Herrenberg from the Escher estate in Gau Bischofsheim in Rheinhessen was the winner in the family of Muskateller wines.

The certificates were presented to the award-winners by the German Wine Queen Josefine Schlumberger on 31 August in Mainz.

“Wines from aromatic grapes varieties have been experiencing a renaissance for some years now. Young consumers in particular appreciate the intense aromas of these varieties and are pushing up demand,” emphasized DWI Managing Director Monika Reule at the award ceremony. “The quantities of quality-tested wine from the four celebrated varieties have risen in the past five years by 50 per cent in Rheinland-Pfalz and by 78 per cent in Wuerttemberg. With a share of one to two per cent of the national volume of quality and “Praedikat” (ie. superior quality) wines, aromatic grape varieties represent a growing niche segment “, Reule said. Moreover, she also sees opportunities for this wine style in some foreign markets, such as the USA, the Netherlands and Great Britain. In these countries, the younger generation as well as more discerning wine drinkers are showing an interest in these grapes.

The strongest growth in the country´s aromatic grape supply was posted as expected by Sauvignon Blanc, with a 38 per cent rise in plantings since 2011 to 894 hectares. However, even with Gewuerztraminer and Muskateller the curves in the vineyard area and quality wine statistics have shown an upward trend. In terms of nationwide cultivation, Scheurebe - at 1,414 hectares - is the most important of the four featured varieties. The total area has albeit fallen by 10 per cent since 2011 but in the last three years there have been approx. 150 hectares of new plantings.
