Outstanding Vinotheks

The von Schubert family's wine-growing history goes back a long way. The Maximin Grünhaus winery has been family-owned since 1882, making it one of the most traditional estates in the region.

Travel through this idyllic stretch of the Middle Mosel region and you're likely to strike upon the newly built, 70-square-meter vinothek from the Pauly family. It serves as the public face for a fine business run by Axel Pauly and his wife Sabrina. 

When Peter Regnery and his wife Andrea first decided to build a new vinothek on their Klüsserath estate, they knew what they didn't want from the design: "Not too many angles." 

A hundred to a hundred and twenty years ago, wines from the Mosel, Saar and Ruwer were among the best in the world. In many capital cities and restaurants, they were sometimes priced higher than well-known names from Bordeaux, Burgundy or Champagne.

For generations, the Gansens and the Andries each owned one of the most well-known wineries on the Mosel, in the popular tourist destination of Ernst, east of Cochem.

Markus Longen and his wife Sabine took the helm at his parents' winegrowing estate in 1999. The pair carefully assessed their future prospects as Mosel winegrowers — and decided to start over.

The Nahe Valley is picturesque beyond compare. It can put a spring in the step of even the world-weariest traveler. Rising Riesling estate Gut Hermannsberg is proud to call this tradition-rich area home, beautifully blending the historic with the modern.

The daughter certainly had a mind of her own. One day, Anette Closheim left the family's 150-year-old winery on the Nahe to travel around the world. Eventually she came back.

The Emmerich-Koebernik family has for centuries pursued the winegrower life amidst the Rhine slate mountains that shape the wild landscape of the Nahe. It's a striking region with three long-extinct volcanoes.

A journey down is a journey back in time. The archaeological fragments in the old Roman cellars of the Villa Rustica at Weingut Poss are open to visitors, and offer a magical atmosphere for tastings.

The long-established Weingut Tesch, led today by Martin Tesch, has been in the hands of the family for eleven generations. During the restructuring in 2002, a strategic all-round renewal took place.

Wein- und Sektgut Hubertus Triebe stands in Schnaudertal near Zeitz, an area best known for Schloss Moritzburg. Active viticulture stopped here in the Middle Ages, so its resumption in 1999 represented a historic moment for the region.
