Weingut Georg Breuer
Outstanding Vinothek in Rheingau
Weingut Georg Breuer quickly makes Riesling fans go into raptures. Already in the early 1980s, Bernhard Breuer had led the winery to international renown. In the meantime, the winery is run by his daughter Theresa Breuer. Her Riesling from the Berg Schlossberg vineyard is much sought-after; collectors are happy to receive two bottles every year, even if they would like to have many more. Yet Theresa Breuer is anything but a winemaker for elite wine connoisseurs. The portfolio of the winery is wide and even the basic range displays qualitative accents from the region every year. Breuer is known for wines that show a special balance and harmony between sweetness and acidity, fruit and minerality.
The winery is located directly in Rüdesheim and yet far away from the usual tourist hustle and bustle. So, if you prefer to taste a few wines in peace and quiet, Breuer is just the place for you. The vinothek, which opened in May 2017, looks back on a long history and is located directly at the winery's historic site. In former times, the space was a storage facility for tanks, an office and also a wine tavern. Now it is cleaned up and home to the spacious vinothek, genuine and unpretentious.
"We want to focus on the wine here," says Theresa Breuer. As few distractions as possible. The concrete structure was left visible and rough, the wooden furniture is glazed in cool grey tones, blue tones set subtle accents, and a steel silhouette of the Rheingau vineyards adorns the wall behind the modern bar. "We don't want to diverge into frills or fairy tales here," says Theresa Breuer. The space is open and thus also invites people to engage in conversation with other guests. "It's nice when customers connect with each other over our wine," says Breuer. That's often where the casual guest meets the Riesling professional.
The walls of the vinothek are decorated with selected works of art, giving the space a feeling of a small studio. Art has always played an important role at the Breuer winery. Since 1980, the labels for the Grand Cru Riesling from Berg Schlossberg have been created by a well-known artist. Selected works of art therefore, hang in the vinothek. If you want to see all the previous labels, descend into Breuer's Kellerwelt (cellar). This underground world was expanded in 2000: now, on about 300 square metres, equipped with underfloor heating, you can view art objects, handcrafted wine production equipment, glass collections, labels and bottles.
The door to the Kellerwelt is always open. A highlight, however, is an event or group tasting that has been specially booked there. Meanwhile, if you step out the door with a glass of wine, you can experience the special atmosphere of a winery as the production is right next to the vinothek. "In autumn you stand there with your glass of wine and we're just pressing grapes," says Breuer. "There is always something going on."
