Cultivation and importance

Viognier is a white wine variety which, after a strong decline at the end of the 19th century, experienced a renaissance in the mid-1980s and is now mainly cultivated in the Rhône region. In Germany, the grape variety was hardly to be found. Due to increasing warming, cultivation has been increasing slightly in recent years.

Vinification and taste

In 2022, 30 hectares were planted with the variety in this country. The colour-intensive golden-yellow to brownish wines often have high alcohol values of 13.5 to 14.5 percent by volume. The wines should be drunk young, when their fragrance is still youthfully present and their weak acid structure has not yet faded. They go well with spicy Asian dishes.
