Zadel, near Meißen, is where Georg Prinz zur Lippe runs Saxony’s oldest private winery, the Weingut Schloss Proschwitz.

There, between Grauburgunder and Weißburgunder vines, stands the stele denoting the Best Vineyard View in the Sachsen Region for 2016. From the vineyards of Proschwitz, the view sweeps over the Elbe Valley to Meißen’s castle hill with the Albrechtsburg and Meißen Cathedral.

Schloss Proschwitz is part of the larger Spaargebirge wine-growing region within Meißen’s boundaries. A hike through Proschwitz’s vineyards will also take you to the neo-baroque Schloss Proschwitz, with its attractive public parklands.
